From Lonely to Loved Song Collection
Jealousy is a sentiment we can all feel at times. Hey, God wrote the tenth commandment to help us know how important it is to resist! Still, its ugly green head appears at times.
In FLTL chapter 15, I recall a time when I was very jealous of someone getting to date a guy I wanted to date. That day, I sat down to write out my thoughts to God, and this song emerged.
Verse four I added later to round out the song, but all the emotions in the rest of the song were raw and real. But so was the repentance at the end!
Older Brother Blues
I’ve been so faithful, Lord
I’ve walked with you so long
I’ve laid my life down every day
I’ve prayed and I have fasted
I’ve given; I have lasted, Lord
Through all the trials you sent my way
But now this younger Christian
Who lived a life of sinning
He went so far away from you
But now that he is come back
There ain’t a thing that he lack and
I’ve got the older brother blues
He’s getting all your blessing
While I just sit here guessing
Exactly what I’ve got to do
To get your sole attention
About the things I mention
That give me the older brother blues
I just want a little money
Someone to call me honey
A house, a car, a TV or two
But you don’t seem to hear me
I wonder if you’re near me
Or too busy blessing your prodigal son
I just want a great vocation
A deep down inspiration
Respect at home, a little fame on the road
But you don’t seem to see it
And I can hardly believe it
The way you bless him after all that he’s done
Tag Done, done, your prodigal son…
That son of a gun
MUSICAL INTERLUDE
Whiny harmonica solo followed by descending bass solo
Well, I don’t mean to be so selfish
Just feeling on the shelf—ish
I need your grace to make me true
And you can be my honey
Don’t need the toys or money
Just take away these older brother blues
And you can be my honey
Don’t need the toys or money
Just take away these older brother blues (2x)
Just take away these older brother, little boy blues
